The Boys at the Beanery: Post-structuralism as it Relates to Black Masculinity on Frank’s Place   Darrell Newton Within this essay I examine how the program reminded many viewers of the rich, culturally diverse construct that is Blackness, no matter their gender or ethnicity. Set in a Black community of New Orleans as opposed to the popular French Quarter, the program reminded many viewers of the rich, culturally diverse construct that is Black African-American culture. I explore representations of race, treatment of ethnic constructs and intra- racial issues, gender and racial self-awareness from an intrinsic perspective. I cite recent interviews with actor/producer and director Tim Reid and his perspective upon the show, representations of African American culture and the cooption of it by those ensnared within the hegemonic matrices that are television. I also offer an analysis of how this program as a cultural and media text provides a limited, yet deeply enriching social history.
